Best things to do in Wake Forest: parks, stages and play

Most of what there is to do in Wake Forest is public and close to home. The Town runs E. Carroll Joyner Park off Harris Road, the Renaissance Centre on S. Brooks Street and a greenway network that grew again in May 2026, when Dunn Creek Greenway Phases 3 and 4 opened. Brooks Street also holds two private stops on the same block downtown: Strike and Barrel, with its bowling lanes and axe throwing, and The Wake Forest Listening Room, where touring songwriters play to a quiet room.

Friday Night on White, the free downtown concert series, wrapped its 2026 season on September 11, 2026, so fall weekends lean on the farmers market, the museum and the trails. Use the list as a menu for a free Saturday or a rainy evening. Each entry carries the cost, the parking or the reason to call ahead, and only Falls Lake sits outside town limits.

How we chose

Nine of the ten entries sit inside the Town of Wake Forest. Falls Lake State Recreation Area is in unincorporated Wake County with Wake Forest mailing addresses; we kept it because most residents treat it as their lake. Every pick needed a dated 2026 sign that it is open, from the Town of Wake Forest, NC Parks or the museum's own site, or, for private venues whose sites we could not read, a directory listing verified in 2026. Awards appear only when named and dated.

Breweries and restaurants belong to the site's other lists, and Tractor's Corn Maze was cut for lacking a 2026 signal. Entries are listed alphabetically, not ranked. Hours and prices were last checked in October 2026; call ahead for anything an entry flags as unconfirmed.

E. Carroll Joyner Park

Wake Forest's signature town park spreads across the north side of town on Harris Road, with formal gardens, a pond, a pecan grove and historic stone walls tied together by five paved loop trails. The Town finished the first phase in July 2009 and opened it to the public that August. In spring the amphitheater hosts the free Six Sundays in Spring concerts, with food trucks parked nearby, and on other days the lawns and loops belong to walkers.

Why we chose them

  • The paved loops run from the 0.5-mile Garden Loop to the 2.2-mile Farm Loop.
  • Six Sundays in Spring ran April 26 to May 31, 2026, with The Tams on May 10.
  • Leashed dogs are welcome, while alcohol and personal gas or charcoal grills are not allowed.
  • The park is an early-voting site from October 15 to 31, 2026, so expect heavier traffic.

Address: Wake Forest — 701 Harris Road

Falls Lake State Recreation Area

A state recreation area in unincorporated Wake County, Falls Lake sits outside Wake Forest's town limits, though its park office on Creedmoor Road carries a Wake Forest mailing address. It is the largest outdoor area near town, with about 60 miles of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail along the lake, plus beaches and boat ramps. Beaverdam has a beach and the 0.6-mile Duck Cove Track Trail, and gas motors are banned on Beaverdam Lake.

Why we chose them

  • The day-use fee is $10 per car, or $5 for seniors and military.
  • Fees apply on April, May and September weekends and daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so October is free.
  • Holly Point is closed for construction, per NC Parks, and all other areas are open.
  • Sandling Beach and the Highway 50 boat ramp both sit off Creedmoor Road.
  • The park is open daily except Christmas, with seasonal hours.

Address: Wake County (unincorporated, state recreation area) — 13304 Creedmoor Road (park office)

Heritage Golf Club

Golfers in the Heritage community have an 18-hole, par-72 course that plays from 5,053 to 7,016 yards depending on the tee. Bob Moore of JMP Golf Design Group designed it, and GolfNow dates the club to 2001. It runs as a semi-private club with public tee times, a driving range and a practice area, and the clubhouse restaurant is open to the public.

Why we chose them

  • Axios Raleigh ranked it No. 4 among the Triangle's best public golf courses in June 2024, updated July 2025.
  • Champion Bermuda greens went in during 2014, per Fun4RaleighKids.
  • Carts are included in the green fee, per GolfNow.
  • The dress code calls for collared shirts, with no denim and no metal spikes.
  • No dated 2026 post from the club turned up, only a May 23, 2026 directory check, so call ahead.

Address: Wake Forest — 1250 Heritage Club Ave.

Polar Ice House Wake Forest

Wake Forest's year-round ice rink is a two-sheet facility on S. Main Street near Capital Boulevard, run by Polar Ice, which operates several Triangle rinks. Programs cover public skating, Learn to Skate, Learn to Play hockey, figure skating and youth and adult hockey. In March 2026, Spectrum News quoted the company saying its Raleigh, Cary and Wake Forest rinks are the busiest.

Why we chose them

  • Public-skate times change and no location-specific schedule is published, so check before going.
  • Prices are not listed publicly, so call for public-skate and program rates.
  • Holiday events such as Skate with Santa appear on past calendars.
  • The newest dated open signal is a Fun4RaleighKids listing verified May 28, 2026.

Address: Wake Forest — 1839 S. Main St., Suite 200

Smith Creek Soccer Center and the Smith Creek and Dunn Creek Greenways

Both the Smith Creek and Dunn Creek greenways start at this Town park of about 17 acres on Heritage Lake Road, which makes it the easiest place to leave the car for a long walk or ride. The park itself has three full-size soccer fields, a playground, a picnic shelter and charcoal grills. Dunn Creek is paved with concrete boardwalks over the streams, and to the south Smith Creek crosses a 558-foot bridge over the Neuse to Raleigh's Neuse River Greenway.

Why we chose them

  • Dunn Creek Phase 3 opened May 8, 2026, adding 1.8 miles to Ailey Young Park and the Traditions greenways.
  • Phase 4 opened the same day, adding 0.62 mile toward Flaherty Park, Orchards at Traditions and Del Webb.
  • The southern Smith Creek segment is about 1.15 miles of 10-foot asphalt from Burlington Mills Road.
  • The Town bought the land in 2002 and had the park developed by 2005.
  • Dogs must stay on a leash, and alcohol is not allowed on the greenways.

Address: Wake Forest — 690 Heritage Lake Road

Strike and Barrel

Bowling anchors this entertainment center of about 24,000 square feet on S. Brooks Street, in the former Brooks Street Bowl space downtown. Beyond traditional and duckpin lanes, it has football bowling, bocce, snookball, cornhole, shuffleboard, axe throwing and arcade games, with a full-service kitchen and full bar. It opened November 7, 2019, and owner David Carmichael expanded it in 2022 with six duckpin lanes, a turf area and lawn games.

Why we chose them

  • Lanes are first come, first served, and reservations are needed only for birthday parties and large groups.
  • No dated 2026 post from the business itself turned up, so call before driving over.
  • The newest open signal is a Fun4RaleighKids listing verified May 29, 2026.
  • Hours and prices could not be confirmed from its own website.

Address: Wake Forest — 413 S. Brooks St.

Wake Forest Farmers Market

Every Saturday, year-round, the downtown market sets up behind Town Hall along S. Taylor Street. Visit Raleigh's 2026 listing describes it as producer-only, with everything produced within 75 miles of Wake Forest. Expect pasture-raised meats, seasonal produce, free-range eggs, herbs, honey, jams, cut flowers, baked goods and crafts, with local musicians playing for shoppers. Admission is free, and the market keeps its own website.

Why we chose them

  • From April through September the market runs 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
  • Winter start times differ between the Town and Visit Raleigh, so confirm before an October through March visit.
  • Visit Raleigh's 2026 event listing runs weekly from January 3 to December 26, 2026.
  • The Town and Visit Raleigh list different phone numbers, so the market's own site is the safer contact.

Address: Wake Forest — 235 S. Taylor St., behind Town Hall

Wake Forest Historical Museum

History starts on N. Main Street, where a four-acre site in the historic district holds the museum building, gardens and the Calvin Jones House, built in 1820 and moved here by the Wake Forest Garden Club in 1956. Wake Forest College began on the Jones plantation, which became the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute in 1834, and the old campus nearby is now Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Admission is free.

Why we chose them

  • The museum's own site calls the Calvin Jones House the oldest building in the Historic District.
  • It opens on weekends only, per a museum post dated February 28, 2025.
  • Guided tours of the Calvin Jones House are booked ahead through Eventbrite.
  • Museum staff co-led the Town's free Black History Month walking tours in February 2026, capped at 15 people.

Address: Wake Forest — 414 N. Main Street

The Wake Forest Listening Room

Original live music gets full attention in this downtown room on Brooks Street, next door to Page 158 Books, where its listing describes a space with no TVs and no chatter during sets. Touring singer-songwriters and songwriter rounds fill the calendar, and food and drinks are available. The series began in 2017 as shows around town, then spent years downstairs from Sugar Magnolia Cafe in a room called Magnolia Roots before moving here.

Why we chose them

  • Dated 2026 shows include Sam Robbins on September 17 and Jason Adamo's songwriters in the round on October 2.
  • Visit Raleigh listed the Sam Robbins ticket at $28.26.
  • It hosted more than 300 shows at Magnolia Roots, closed in late 2021 and reopened here in October 2023, per its listing.
  • Ticket resellers still label shows "at Magnolia Roots," so check the venue line before buying.
  • Quiet during sets is the house rule.

Address: Wake Forest — 415 Brooks St.

Wake Forest Renaissance Centre

Downtown's town-run performing arts venue sits on S. Brooks Street and runs a season of concerts and stage shows. The 2026 Summer at the Centre series brought The Embers featuring Craig Woolard on June 3, America's Sweethearts on July 1 and Interactive Mystery Theater on August 22. Visit Raleigh also lists Firebox Theatre Company at the same address, in The Graham, a 65-seat black box in a historic cotton warehouse with a three-quarter thrust stage.

Why we chose them

  • Members in the Partners Circle, Patrons and Friends tiers get early access to tickets.
  • A Town release dated March 26, 2026 opened membership renewals for the 2026-27 season.
  • Tickets are sold at the box office or by phone, and the Town release listed no prices.
  • No dated 2026 Firebox Theatre Company show turned up, so check its schedule before planning around it.

Address: Wake Forest — 405 S. Brooks St.

Prices, hours and opening status last checked October 9, 2026. Call ahead where an entry says to.
