Best Mexican restaurants in Raleigh
For Wake Forest readers, Raleigh's Mexican restaurants sort themselves by drive. The North Raleigh entries on Falls of Neuse and Lead Mine roads are the short trip; Glenwood Avenue near Crabtree is a little farther; downtown, Oakwood and Glenwood South are the long haul and mean deck or street parking.
Raleigh's Mexican cooking in 2026 has one restaurant with national recognition, Mala Pata, which holds a Bib Gourmand from the MICHELIN Guide American South 2025, the only Mexican restaurant among the Raleigh-area selections. Around it sit a 35-year family kitchen on Glenwood, Dos Taquitos, and the current INDY Week winner, Gringo A Go Go in Oakwood. What the city does not have, as far as we could confirm, is a single-region restaurant; Oaxacan, Yucatecan and Guadalajara dishes turn up inside broader menus instead.
Our read: Mala Pata is the one to book first. Use the rest to pick by neighborhood and by night, since several of these kitchens are dinner only or close on Sunday or Monday.
How we chose
Every restaurant here is inside Raleigh city limits and had a dated signal that it was open as of September 2026, a live hours page on its own site or a 2026 press mention. Facts come from each restaurant's own site first. Awards count only when we can name the award and the year, such as the INDY Week Best of the Triangle 2025 Wake County results and the MICHELIN Guide American South 2025. We left out chains, buffets and places that have closed. We also left out taquerias, since the site already has a best-tacos list and they belong there. Entries are listed alphabetically and are not ranked. Hours and prices were last checked in September 2026; call ahead for anything an entry calls unconfirmed.
Centro
Angela Salamanca opened Centro at the corner of Wilmington and Hargett streets in September 2007, and she still runs it nineteen years later. The origin, as Our State told it in 2019, was a cooking-class trip to Oaxaca in the mid-2000s, and the dinner menu still leans that way, with organic chicken over mole poblano and NC shrimp Veracruzana. On the online ordering menu, the Enchiladas de la Familia are $17 and the sweet-potato and queso fresco flautas are $11. The upstairs bar, Gallo Pelón, closed in May 2025; Centro stays open downstairs.
Why we chose them
- The homepage prints "Founded 2007," and Our State dated the opening to September of that year.
- The same owner went on to earn Mala Pata's MICHELIN Bib Gourmand in 2025, the only one for Mexican food in Raleigh.
- Dinner is Wednesday through Saturday only; the restaurant closes Sunday and does not serve Tuesday evenings.
- Cooking classes covering sopa de tortilla and chiles en nogada were part of the program Our State described in 2019.
- Reservations and private events are booked through its own site.
Address: Raleigh — 106 S. Wilmington St.

Dos Taquitos
Since 1991, the Salamanca family has run this Glenwood Avenue dining room near Crabtree, and the founder's child runs it now. Carlos Salamanca came to the U.S. to study marine biology and learned the cooking in a restaurant kitchen and on trips to Mexico, per the restaurant's own story page. The dinner menu is where Raleigh's regional dishes show up by name: cochinita pibil, Yucatan-style achiote and citrus pork slow-roasted in plantain leaves, $18, and Cositas Con Mole with a Veracruz mole of chiles, seeds, nuts and galletas, $17. The Enchiladas de Puebla are $17.
Why we chose them
- The homepage tagline reads "Making Steak Tacos & Enchiladas de Puebla since 1991," the longest run on this list.
- Las Carnitas, $14, is pork marinated 24 hours in beer and orange juice and braised more than 10 hours, per the menu.
- The carne asada is a 9.5-ounce Certified Angus skirt steak marinated 48 hours, $34.
- Closed Sunday, and open for dinner only the rest of the week, per its own site, with reservations on Resy.
- Its Glenwood South sibling, Dos Taquitos Xoco, has closed, so the Glenwood Avenue original is the family's only restaurant.
Address: Raleigh — 6101 Glenwood Ave.

El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant
A block from the Blount Street Deck near Moore Square, El Rodeo is the downtown cantina INDY Week readers put second in Wake County for Mexican food in 2025. The menu is a classic Mexican-American list with no regional claim: carne asada $19.75, a parrillada mix $25.75, camarones al mojo de ajo $17.99 and enchiladas suizas $13.50, per its own ordering site. Whether it shares ownership today with the Ibarra family's original 1995 El Rodeo on Pleasant Valley Road is not published, and neither is an opening year.
Why we chose them
- Runner-up, Best Mexican Restaurant, INDY Week Best of the Triangle 2025, Wake County.
- Open daily, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, per its ordering site.
- The Blount Street Deck is about 350 feet away, per the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.
- Reservation policy is not published; call ahead for a group.
- This Is Raleigh's May 2026 roundup calls it a downtown favorite for fajitas and margaritas.

Gonza Tacos y Tequila – North Raleigh
Colombian-born Gonza Salamanca and his cousin Carlos Rodriguez opened this Lead Mine Road original in 2011, and it grew into a five-location Triangle group with a food truck. The kitchen bills itself as Colombian-Mexican, the only such pairing in the city, and Cary Magazine in 2018 pointed to chile-braised short rib tacos with crème fraîche and poblano salsa. The bar carries more than 72 tequilas and a house blonde ale from Fortnight Brewing. The Wake Forest location is a separate restaurant; this entry is the North Raleigh one.
Why we chose them
- INDY Week named it Best Mexican Restaurant in Wake County seven years running, 2016 through 2022, per the company's own accolades page.
- That streak has ended; INDY Week's 2025 Wake County award for Best Mexican Restaurant went to Gringo A Go Go.
- Closed Monday, and the dinner windows are short: 5 to 8 p.m. most nights and 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
- Lunch is Tuesday through Friday only, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., per the North Raleigh site in September 2026.
- The Hillsborough Street location near NC State closed after eight years, citing staffing.
Address: Raleigh — 7713 Lead Mine Rd., Ste. 39

Gringo A Go Go
A converted 1930s mission-style service station at Person and Edenton streets in Oakwood houses the current INDY Week winner for Mexican food in Wake County. Walter magazine traced the cooking in 2019 to home food from Almolonga, Guerrero, with posole, chilaquiles and tortas as the starting points, and the homepage describes hand-pressed tortillas. Brunch entrées run $12 to $19, per This Is Raleigh in 2025, including chilaquiles verdes with a house green sauce. Sources disagree on who owns it, and its hours are unconfirmed as of September 2026, so call before you drive.
Why we chose them
- Winner, Best Mexican Restaurant, INDY Week Best of the Triangle 2025, Wake County, ahead of runners-up El Rodeo and Mi Cancun.
- Opened in December 2013 with a grand opening in April 2014, per INDY Week's coverage at the time.
- Hours conflict: listings show 11 a.m. daily, while the restaurant's own homepage banner in September 2026 read "Opens Monday at 3PM".
- Visit Raleigh's listing quotes the restaurant's stated aim of paying its employees a living wage.
- A small lot sits out front with a larger one behind the building, per This Is Raleigh.
Address: Raleigh — 100 N. Person St.

Jose and Sons
The Ibarra siblings' restaurant on Pleasant Valley Road occupies the building where the family's first El Rodeo opened in 1995. Jose and Sons itself started in the Warehouse District in fall 2013, converted from the family's Jibarra, and moved to this northwest Raleigh address in 2020. The menu crosses Mexican and Southern cooking: Crank Arm Barbacoa is brisket braised in local beer and chile inside a banana leaf, $11, and the grilled Kurobuta pork chop al pastor comes over a purple potato, chorizo and poblano hash, $26.
Why we chose them
- Its own About page says The New York Times described the menu as a mash-up of Southern and Mexican cuisine.
- Original executive chef Oscar Diaz later earned a James Beard Best Chef: Southeast nomination, per a Downtown Raleigh Alliance profile that gives no year.
- Open seven days a week, per its own site, with Sunday hours ending at 9 p.m.
- The menu says "local corn tortillas"; whether they are made in house is not published.
- Guacamole with heirloom tomatoes from NC farmers markets is $9 on the dinner menu.
Address: Raleigh — 4112 Pleasant Valley Rd.

La Santa Modern Mexican Food
In Glenwood South, La Santa makes the clearest single-city pitch of any Raleigh Mexican restaurant: the owner's site calls the menu "my mother's recipes from Guadalajara," and the menu opens with torta ahogada, the carnitas sandwich on bolillo that the restaurant labels Guadalajara's signature dish, $15. The Quesadilla De Mamá comes on a 10-inch handmade corn tortilla with Oaxaca cheese, $18, and the barbacoa tacos on grilled corn tortillas are $15. Margaritas start from fresh-squeezed fruit. The same owners run a Durham La Santa and the newer street-food spot La Mala, also in Glenwood South.
Why we chose them
- Open daily, with a 2:30 to 5 p.m. break between lunch and dinner on weekdays, per its own site.
- Saturday hours run to midnight, the latest published closing time among the downtown entries here.
- The tacos de arrachera come on "homemade corn tortillas" and are sold at market price.
- Opening year could not be confirmed; Raleigh Magazine in 2024 called it the owner's original restaurant.
- Reservations appear to run through OpenTable, though that was not verified on the restaurant's own site.
Address: Raleigh — 222 Glenwood Ave., Ste. 107

Mala Pata
The only Mexican restaurant among the Raleigh-area MICHELIN selections sits in Gateway Plaza off Capital Boulevard, in the same strip as Union Special. Mala Pata opened in May 2025 from the owner of Centro downtown, and the kitchen grinds its masa daily from heirloom Oaxacan corn; a basket of made-to-order tortillas is $6 and comes in a white or a blue corn variety named on the menu. Carnitas street tacos run $14, chicken enchiladas $23 and a grilled steak coloradito $34. A seven-seat mezcal bar, Peyote Mini-Bar, is attached.
Why we chose them
- MICHELIN Guide American South 2025 gave it a Bib Gourmand, the only one for a Mexican restaurant in the Raleigh area.
- Axios Raleigh put it on its list of the best new Triangle restaurants of 2025, published December 12, 2025.
- Dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday only, with Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Monday is closed.
- Visit Raleigh's listing still shows an older Wednesday-to-Saturday schedule, so confirm Tuesday dinner before driving down.
- Axios described the enchiladas as coming with a Cheerwine-infused mole and a whole butterflied fish served with fresh tortillas.
Address: Raleigh — 2431 Crabtree Blvd., Ste. 102, at Gateway Plaza

Salt & Lime Cabo Grill
Ken and Katie Smith's North Ridge Shopping Center grill, at Falls of Neuse and Spring Forest, is Baja-inspired rather than regional Mexican, and its own site says as much: "old Mexico with new... flavors from around the world." The owners' story ties the place to fish tacos in San Diego and Pensacola, and the kitchen runs from salmon tacos, $18, and carne asada, $18, to shrimp and grits at $22 to $23 and calamari, $16. A second location is on Grove Barton Road in northwest Raleigh.
Why we chose them
- Closed Sunday; open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., per its own site.
- Chef DJ Nagle joined in 2019, per the About page, which does not give an opening year for the restaurant.
- Visit Raleigh's listing describes the cooking as influenced by the coastal cuisine of Baja.
- NC Eat & Play in 2022 singled out the braised short rib tacos.
Address: Raleigh — 6006 Falls of Neuse Rd., at North Ridge Shopping Center
