Best Mexican restaurants in Wake Forest: from tacos to birria
Wake Forest has plenty of Mexican restaurants, but few of them keep a website or post anything dated, and the delivery apps list more chains than independents. The picks in town fall into a few pockets: downtown on White Street, The Factory on South Main Street, and the Capital Boulevard corridor out to Forestville Road. Lil Hombre Smoked Taco Joint brought live-fire tacos to White Street in late 2025, while Tlaquepaque Mexican Restaurant has been cooking on Capital Boulevard since 1994.
The list had to widen to reach eight. El Jefe Modern Mex is in Rolesville, and El Tapatio and Beto El Poblano sit side by side on Falls of Neuse Road in north Raleigh. Treat it as a shortlist and read the bullets: several open statuses rest on delivery apps and third-party pages, and those entries say to call before you drive.
How we chose
We started inside Wake Forest and found five picks with Wake Forest addresses and a 2026 signal (Tlaquepaque's town-limits status was not confirmed). El Jefe Modern Mex in Rolesville and El Tapatio and Beto El Poblano in north Raleigh are a short drive from town and showed current, dated activity. Every pick had to be open as of October 2026; facts come from each business's own site where one exists, and awards appear only when named and dated. National chains were left out, and one regional group, Gonza, was allowed. Downtown's Las Mas was left off because no reopening could be confirmed.
Entries are listed alphabetically, not ranked. Hours and prices were last checked in October 2026; call ahead for anything an entry marks as unconfirmed.
Beto El Poblano
Next to El Tapatio's block on Falls of Neuse Road in north Raleigh, this young independent opened in 2023 and puts seafood beside the tacos. The site lists oysters, shrimp tostadas, shrimp cocktail and salmon along with honey chipotle shrimp tacos and El Poblano's Dinner Sampler. The bar pours a Cantarito, and in October 2026 it ran a Mangonada Margarita promotion all month. The restaurant also runs its own food truck.

- Margarita Mondays bring a $7 house margarita, per the restaurant's own site.
- Lunch specials run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the site.

There is no website, so the delivery-app menus are the best guide to what the kitchen sends out.
Why we chose them
- DoorDash listed Camarones Huichol and Steak Vallarta at $25.99 each in October 2026, delivery prices that may run high.
- No dated 2026 post from the restaurant itself turned up; its open status rests on DoorDash reviews and a Giftly listing.

Lil Hombre Smoked Taco Joint
Downtown Wake Forest got this taco joint on South White Street by November 2025, the second store of a concept that started in Clayton. Meat for the tacos is smoked over a live fire, and owner Jason Howard told Business Debut the marinades are made in-house. The tortilla is a corn-and-flour hybrid pressed with cheese. Each protein comes Hombre style with chipotle mayo and cheddar, street style with cilantro and onion, or fajita style with chipotle slaw.
Why we chose them
- Business Debut reported it open on November 22, 2025, and Wake Forest Matters listed it in June 2026.
- Drinks run to margaritas, Mexican beers and frozen drinks.
- There is no website or published phone, so the Instagram account @lilhombrewakeforest is the best place to check in.
- Business Debut gave the hours as daily from 11 a.m. until the food runs out; other listings differ, so treat posted hours as unconfirmed.

Tlaquepaque Mexican Restaurant
Capital Boulevard near Forestville Road has had this sit-down Mexican kitchen since 1994, per its own site, which makes it the longest-running pick here. The menu leans into birria: the Special of the Month is a 12-inch Pizza Birria finished with chile toreado and consomé, and a sampler tray brings birria rolls, a quesabirria taco and birria nachos. Pan de elote is made from scratch. The menu page posts no prices.
Why we chose them
- The address sits near the town's southern edge, and whether it falls inside Wake Forest town limits was not confirmed.
- Southern Lux Living reported in 2022 that the guacamole is made tableside.
- Lunch, kids and catering menus are listed on its site, which also takes online orders.
- Delivery apps list it as Tlaquepaque Mexican Cuisine, so search under that name.
