The best roofers in the Raleigh area

North Carolina has no roofing license. What a roofer needs is a General Contractor license, and only for contracts over $30,000, which means a roofer without one is not automatically a problem: it is lawful if the work stays under that figure, runs as a subcontractor under a licensed GC, or is repairs only. It does mean the company cannot contract a full replacement over $30,000 in its own name.

Three of the eleven companies below hold no General Contractor license. We say so in each case, because it changes the question you should ask rather than settling it.

We have not hired any of these companies and nobody paid to be listed. Every license, rating and date below was checked against the issuing board or the Better Business Bureau on the date at the foot of this guide. Anything a company claims that we could not verify is described as a claim.

How we chose

Every license here was checked at the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, including the public-matters file that records disciplinary action. Every BBB rating and accreditation date came off the company's own BBB profile, and every certification claim was checked at the manufacturer where the manufacturer publishes a tier. Where we could not confirm a tier, the entry says so.

One company was dropped for cause: Spilman, Inc. of Wake Forest holds a revoked General Contractor license, the most serious finding in the set. Two more were dropped because we could not confirm they are still in business. Entries are alphabetical and unranked.

Artisan Quality Roofing

Four manufacturer credentials sit behind this Apex roofer, and that is the argument for it: the tiers a manufacturer grants are what let a contractor write an extended warranty on the shingles it installs. GAF Master Elite, GAF System Plus, Owens Corning Preferred and CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster is the broadest set we could verify on this list. About fifteen years of work stand behind it, with the site and the BBB file agreeing on the span.

Why we chose them

  • Holds an A+ BBB rating and has been BBB Accredited since September 2016.
  • Holds no North Carolina General Contractor license, so ask how your job is written.
  • That is lawful while individual contracts stay under $30,000 or a licensed GC signs.
  • Wake Forest appears on the published service list.

Address: Apex — 12927 US 64 Hwy E, Ste. 100-A

Baker Roofing Company

Nothing else on these lists goes back to 1915, and the company's own history and its BBB file agree on the year. Certification runs deep: CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier, James Hardie Alliance Elite, Pella Platinum, plus a HAAG certified inspector on staff. Residential jobs are handled by a separate arm, Baker Home Exteriors, working out of Apex, while the main operation stays in Raleigh. Free estimates come standard, and the warranty side is where the questions are.

Why we chose them

  • General Contractor license L.05812 is unlimited in Building, active since October 1971.
  • The license carries no public matters at the state contractor board.
  • BBB rates it A+, though the company is not BBB Accredited.
  • A lifetime warranty runs through CertainTeed's tiers, but the length is unpublished.
  • The Apex residential arm names Wake Forest in its service area.

Address: Raleigh — 517 Mercury St. (residential arm in Apex, 1051 Schieffelin Rd.)

Bond Roofing Company

A price that holds is the pitch, and this Raleigh company states it plainly: the number you are quoted is the number you pay. Its claim to have been roofing since 2003 matches the BBB record exactly. What the company does not publish is any manufacturer certification or warranty term, which leaves two obvious questions for a first call. It is also the only roofer here licensed in the trade's own contractor classification.

Why we chose them

  • Holds license L.74211 in the roofing-specific S classification, unlimited and active since April 2014.
  • The license carries no public matters at the state contractor board.
  • BBB rates it A+, with accreditation dating back to October 2009.
  • Coverage is greater Raleigh, and Wake Forest is not named on the site.

Address: Raleigh — 2609 Spring Forest Rd.

Camden Roofing & Construction

An online cost calculator sets this one apart, since no other roofer here lets you get a number before anyone stands in your driveway. Free inspections and detailed proposals come with it. Owens Corning ranks the company Platinum Preferred, the top of that program, and it also works as a VELUX partner and a MasterShield installer. Site and BBB file agree on about sixteen years in the business.

Why we chose them

  • Holds license L.69092, unlimited in Building, active since March 2010 with no public matters.
  • BBB rates it A+ and has accredited the company since March 2010.
  • Headquarters is in Charlotte, and the Raleigh location is a branch office.
  • The workmanship warranty length is not published, so ask for it.
  • Wake Forest is not named in the service area.

Address: Raleigh office — 3109 Poplarwood Ct., Ste. 300 (headquarters in Charlotte)

Lifetime Roofing and Exteriors

Warranty language is clearer here than at any other roofer on the list: a 100 percent labor and material warranty alongside a manufacturer lifetime warranty and a lifetime craftsmanship warranty, all stated as transferable. Estimates cost nothing. The company works out of Wake Forest itself, which makes it the most local option for readers north of Raleigh. Two pieces of paperwork are worth raising before anyone signs anything.

Why we chose them

  • Holds no North Carolina General Contractor license, which limits what it can contract directly.
  • That is lawful below $30,000 per contract, so ask how the job is written.
  • The site shows an A+ BBB badge; the rating is correct, but the company is not accredited.
  • A CertainTeed Shingle Master claim appears without naming the SELECT tier.
  • Covers Wake Forest, Raleigh, Youngsville, Franklinton, Creedmoor and Oxford.

Address: Wake Forest — 120 Capcom Ave., Ste. 102E

Raleigh Residential Exteriors

The widest published service area on this list belongs here, twelve towns running from Durham and Cary out to Clayton, Willow Spring and Wake Forest. The license is a Limited General Contractor license in the Residential classification, which is the right classification for house work. Claims about experience need reading carefully: the 30-plus years on the site describes staff time in the trade, while the BBB file puts the business itself at ten years.

Why we chose them

  • Holds license L.80192, Limited in Residential, active since June 2018 with no public matters.
  • Limited caps the value of a single project, so raise a large replacement early.
  • BBB rates the company A+, and it is not accredited.
  • A ShingleMaster logo appears with no tier named, and we could not confirm it.

Address: Raleigh — 3450 Tarheel Dr., Ste. 101

Ridge Valley Exteriors

Owens Corning Platinum Preferred is the top rung of that manufacturer's program, and this company sits on it. Emergency service runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which most of this list does not offer, and the first inspection is free and framed as a 21-point check. Both the site and the BBB file put the founding at 2009. Where the company is actually headquartered takes a little more digging.

Why we chose them

  • Holds license L.70427, unlimited in Building, active since March 2011 with no public matters.
  • BBB rates it A+, with accreditation running back to March 2009.
  • The corporate address of record is Marco Island, Florida, not North Carolina.
  • The workmanship warranty length is not published.
  • Wake Forest is not named in the service area.

Address: Raleigh office — 3900 Barrett Dr., Ste. 301-G (corporate address in Marco Island, Florida)

Rodas Construction

Published license numbers do not always match the board record, and this one does, digit for digit, which is rarer than it ought to be. The company is GAF Master Elite, James Hardie certified and Trex certified, and it works across nineteen communities in central and eastern North Carolina. Consultations and estimates are free. One number does not line up: the founding year on the site differs from the year in the BBB file.

Why we chose them

  • The published number matches the board: L.81984, Limited in Building, active since June 2019.
  • BBB rates it A+, with accreditation since December 2012.
  • The site says 2004 and the BBB file says 2006, a gap of two years.
  • Emergency roof repair is offered, but only within weekday business hours.
  • Wake Forest is named among the nineteen communities served.

Address: Raleigh — 1100 Logger Ct., Ste. C-100

Roofstruction

Geography is the argument. The nine towns this Youngsville company lists, from Wake Forest and Rolesville out to Apex and Cary, track this magazine's coverage map more closely than any other roofer's. Availability is advertised as 24/7, and a quote comes free with a roof inspection. Three items sit on the other side of the ledger, and each one is worth raising on a first call.

Why we chose them

  • Holds no North Carolina General Contractor license, which is lawful under $30,000 per contract.
  • That limits what the company can contract directly, so ask how the job is written.
  • Displays GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning and Atlas logos without naming any program tier.
  • Publishes no founding year, against nine years in the BBB file.
  • BBB rates it A+, with accreditation since November 2017.

Address: Youngsville — 5240 NC 96 Hwy W, Ste. 101

Skywalker Roofing Company

Holding two top manufacturer tiers at once is uncommon, and this is one of only two companies here that manage it: Owens Corning Platinum Preferred since 2019 and CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster. Site and BBB file agree the business started in 2003, which puts it at roughly 23 years. Quotes are free and carry no obligation. The Raleigh address is a satellite office; the company runs out of Stokesdale, up in the Triad.

Why we chose them

  • Holds license L.101764, unlimited in Building, active since October 2023 and clean.
  • BBB rates it A+, with accreditation since October 2017.
  • A predecessor entity, Diligent Holdings, holds an invalid license that expired in 2023.
  • Quote the current license number rather than the expired predecessor one.
  • Wake Forest is not named in the service area.

Address: Raleigh office — 555 Fayetteville St., Ste. 201 (headquarters in Stokesdale)

Southern Premier Roofing

Wind and hail are the reason to look here. Alongside GAF Master Elite status, the company is an IBHS FORTIFIED contractor, a standard for building a roof to take severe weather, and one that sits apart from any manufacturer's program. Estimates are free, and a GAF Gold Pledge warranty is available on qualifying installations. Company age is hard to pin down, because the site publishes no founding year at all.

Why we chose them

  • Holds license L.87951, Limited in Building, active since May 2022 with no public matters.
  • BBB rates it A+, with accreditation since January 2020.
  • The BBB file puts the business at eight years, and the site offers nothing to compare.
  • The Gold Pledge warranty length is not published, so get it in writing.
  • Wake Forest is not named in the service area.

Address: Raleigh — 4060 Barrett Dr.
