The best daycares in Raleigh and Wake Forest
Every parent searching for child care in Raleigh runs into the same wall: everything is five stars. There are 106 centers in Raleigh alone holding a Five Star Center License from the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education, so the star rating tells you a center is licensed and above board, and almost nothing else.
What hardly anybody uses is the number underneath it. DCDEE publishes a quality point score out of 15 on every facility's detail page, split between program standards and staff education. It is the state's own tiebreaker, it is free to look up, and it is what this list is ranked on. Across the ten centers below the range runs from a perfect 15 down to 13, which is a real spread once you know to look for it.
Points are not everything, though. A center on 13 points that is four minutes from your house and has a place for your child in September beats a 15-point center with an eighteen-month waiting list on the other side of the beltline. Use the points to narrow the list, then go and look at the rooms.
Before the list starts, one thing to be clear about. We have not hired any of these businesses, and we are not telling you they do good work, because we have no way of knowing that. What is ranked below is ranked on facts you can check yourself: license number and status, years in business, published credentials, BBB rating and accreditation, service area and published hours. Where a business publishes nothing, we say so instead of filling the gap. Get more than one quote, and look the license up yourself before you sign anything.
Hours below come from each business's own published information and change without notice. Call ahead if you are making a special trip.
The Goddard School - Creedmoor Road
This is the only center in the guide with a perfect score on the state's own quality scale: 15 out of 15 DCDEE points, made up of 7 of 7 for program standards and 7 of 7 for staff education. On top of that it carries Cognia accreditation running through to 2031, which is an outside body checking the same things the state does.
Hours: Mon-Fri 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Address: 6600 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh, NC 27613
Why they made the list
- Five Star Center License from the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education, effective June 12, 2025, license 92003899. Verified in the state's own facility search.

- Cognia accredited from December 2024 through to June 2031, according to the school's own accreditation panel.
- Runs the Wonder of Learning curriculum and takes children from six weeks through pre-K.
- Why the points matter at all: 106 Raleigh centers hold a five-star license, so the stars rank nothing. The points are the state's published tiebreaker and hardly anybody uses them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best daycare in Raleigh, NC?
On the state's own quality scale, The Goddard School on Creedmoor Road. It scores a perfect 15 out of 15 DCDEE quality points, full marks on both program standards and staff education, and holds Cognia accreditation running through to June 2031. It is the only center in this guide with a perfect score.
What does a five star daycare rating mean in North Carolina?
It is the top of the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education's licensing scale, awarded on program standards and staff education. The trouble is how common it is: 106 centers in Raleigh hold one. The more useful figure is the quality point score out of 15 on each facility's detail page, which is what the star rating rounds off.
How do I look up a daycare's license and inspection record in NC?
Use the DCDEE child care facility search at ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov/childcaresearch. Search by county or by name, then open the facility's detail page for the license number, the star rating, the quality points, the licensed capacity, the ages served, and the inspection and compliance history. The compliance history tells you more than the star rating does.
Which daycares in Raleigh open earliest?
The Learning Experience on Quoin Way runs 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., a full half hour either side of everyone else on this list. Every other center here opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.
Are there highly rated daycares in Wake Forest?
Two are in this guide, both on 14 of 15 quality points: Cranfield Academy Wake Forest on Heritage Links Drive, with a licensed capacity of 210, and the Primrose School of Heritage Wake Forest on Heritage Lake Road. Wakefield Creative School, just over the line in north Raleigh, is the next closest and also scores 14.
What should I ask when I tour a daycare?
Ask for the current staff-to-child ratio in your child's room, not the licensed maximum. Ask about turnover among lead teachers over the last year, what happens when a teacher calls in sick, how they handle biting and other behavior, and how they communicate with you during the day. Then ask to see the compliance history, which you can also pull yourself from the DCDEE search.
