Raleigh Tamale Festival
Afternoon, check organiser · Moore Square, 201 S Blount Street
Tamale makers from across the Triangle set up in Moore Square for an afternoon, and entry is free.
A tamale is masa and filling steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf, and the regional variation is enormous. Oaxacan, Salvadoran, Guatemalan and Mexican-regional versions differ in wrapper, texture, filling and heat, which is exactly why a festival built around one dish is more interesting than it sounds.
Getting the most out of it:
- Buy one from several stalls rather than several from one
- Ask what region each vendor is cooking from
- Bring cash for the smaller operations
- Come early. Popular vendors sell out rather than restock.
One thing to sort out before you travel: listed times for this event vary between sources, with some giving a late morning start and others an afternoon one. Check the organizer's own listing on the week rather than relying on an aggregator.
Moore Square is a short walk from the Fayetteville Street decks and sits beside the Moore Square transit station, which makes it one of the easier downtown venues to reach without driving at all.
Free to enter, pay for what you eat.
Single-dish festivals live or die on vendor variety, and this one draws from the Triangle's substantial Central American and Mexican communities rather than a handful of restaurants. That is what makes walking the full circuit before buying worth the discipline it requires.
