Dorothea Dix Park

About

Dorothea Dix Park covers 308 acres on Richardson Drive just south of downtown, making it the largest park in Raleigh. The Big Field alone is wide enough for kite flying, pick-up games and the large community events the park hosts through the year.

At its center is the 18.5-acre Gipson Play Plaza, with playgrounds, gardens, public art and water features. The Rocky Branch Greenway runs through the grounds, and the skyline view from the open slopes is one of the best in the city. There is enough room here to absorb a crowd without feeling crowded.

What to know

  • The sunflower field blooms in July and draws thousands of people and pollinators.
  • An annual Inter-Tribal Pow Wow brings competition dancing, music and vendors to the park.
  • Indoor yoga programs are offered for all ages through Self-Care Sunday.
  • TeenSpace runs programs for middle and high school students, including a vendor market.
  • The park also has an off-leash dog park, giant troll sculptures and a flowers cottage.
