Best barbecue in Wake Forest: two in town, six worth the drive
Barbecue inside Wake Forest town limits is thin right now. Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q on Capital Boulevard is the one barbecue restaurant confirmed open in town, and Lil Hombre Smoked Taco Joint on South White Street cooks its taco meats over live fire. Several local names have closed, among them Smith's Smokehouse on South Main Street and Fire Pit BBQ at Gateway Commons.
So this list drives. Clyde Cooper's BBQ left downtown Raleigh for Millbrook Road in January 2026, which puts a recipe book dating to 1938 about 20 minutes down Capital Boulevard. Prime Barbecue in Knightdale holds a 2025 MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand. Warehouse BBQ in Youngsville has a second store permitted on Capital Boulevard in Wake Forest, though its own site still showed that store closed in October 2026.
Read it by style: Eastern chopped pork, Texas-leaning brisket, Puerto Rican whole hog or smoked-meat sandwiches. Each entry names the town it is really in.
How we chose
Only Smithfield's and Lil Hombre sit inside Wake Forest. We widened to independent barbecue within about 20 minutes: Youngsville (Warehouse BBQ, Grub Smokehouse), Knightdale (Prime Barbecue) and north Raleigh (Clyde Cooper's, Lechón). Chop Shop, inside the Raleigh Beltline, is 22 to 25 minutes away; we kept it for its No. 10 N&O Triangle ranking and oak and hickory smoke.
Each pick needed a 2026 open signal, facts come from each business's own site, and awards count only when named and dated. National chains, food trucks with no fixed stop and closed places were left out; Smithfield's is the one regional chain. Lil Hombre also appears on the Mexican list. Entries are alphabetical, not ranked. Hours and prices were last checked in October 2026; call about anything marked unconfirmed.

Just inside the Raleigh Beltline near Wake Forest Road, Chop Shop is a barbecue counter inside a gas-station convenience store, about 22 to 25 minutes from downtown Wake Forest. A pulled pork sandwich is $9, plates are $14, and sides such as Brunswick stew and cowboy beans are $4 each.
