Best things to do in Wendell: parks, murals and a millpond

Wendell sits in eastern Wake County, east of Raleigh and southeast of Wake Forest, and most of its best outings are public places. Downtown has the Wendell Museum and the mural trail within a couple of blocks of each other, J. Ashley Wall Towne Square, where the annual Harvest Festival is held each October, and Bearded Bee Brewing Co. on East Campen Street.

Two Wake County preserves with Wendell mailing addresses, Turnipseed and Robertson Millpond, sit just outside town. Crossroads Corn Maze runs Friday through Sunday until November 1, and Treelight Square at Wendell Falls is the newer retail and event hub. Restaurants have their own Wendell list, so none repeat here.

Use it to plan a half day: a downtown walk past the murals and into the museum, or a morning on the water or the boulder trails outside town.

How we chose

Places inside Wendell came first. Robertson Millpond Preserve and Turnipseed Nature Preserve sit in unincorporated Wake County within about 10 minutes of town, and Crossroads Corn Maze has a Wendell mailing address but is very likely outside town limits too; all three are included because they use Wendell mailing addresses. Each pick needed a sign of being open as of October 2026, facts came from operators' own pages first, and the one award cited is named and dated. We left out restaurants, Lake Myra County Park (not open), the Carolina Brewing taproom (status unconfirmed) and the Wendell Falls trails, since non-resident access is unclear.

Entries are listed alphabetically, not ranked. Hours and prices were last checked in October 2026; call about anything marked unconfirmed.

Bearded Bee Brewing Co.

Founder Derek Ayscue keeps bees and started out brewing mead with his own honey, and he and Keri Ayscue opened Bearded Bee on East Campen Street in 2020. The brewery sits in a restored urban barn with indoor seating and an outdoor beer garden. WRAL's October 2025 fall roundup listed the Bee-Hosen Oktoberfest at 6.0% ABV and the Bee-Witched Pumpkin Ale at 5.9%, and the Wendell Falls blog named a Honey Come Back Hazy Honey IPA in 2020.

Why we chose them

  • WRAL Voters' Choice named it Best Brewery of 2022, per WRAL in 2025.
  • Dogs are welcome, according to the brewery's own site.
  • Food comes from food trucks and partner restaurants, per the Wendell Falls blog.
  • Its 2026 beard competition benefits the Autism Society of North Carolina, per its home page.
  • Hours could not be confirmed, so check the brewery's site before going.

Crossroads Corn Maze

Fall only: the 2026 season runs October 2 through November 1 at this family farm on Watkins Road, which has a Wendell mailing address and is very likely in unincorporated northeast Wake County. The 5-acre corn maze is the main event, and each ticket also covers a hayride and one pumpkin. A hay maze and a rope maze are on the grounds too, and the farm sells fresh fall produce.

Why we chose them

  • Tickets are $17 for ages 13 and up and $14 for ages 6 to 12, per the farm's site.
  • The "When the Stalks Go Dark" flashlight night maze runs 7 to 9 p.m. on select dates.
  • It is closed Monday through Thursday except for booked group events.
  • Fire pit rental is free with entry, per the farm's site.
  • It stays open in light rain with no refunds, though rain checks may be given.

Address: Wendell area (northeast Wake County) — 5712 Watkins Rd.

Daughter's Soft Serve

Family-owned and named for the owners' two daughters, this downtown Main Street shop builds soft-serve cones with cores, fillings piped down the center such as brownie batter or dulce de leche, and finishes them in hard-shell dips like blueberry or birthday cake. Vanilla, chocolate and dairy-free vanilla are the base flavors, plus seasonal ones. Biscoff and maple flakes are among the toppings. Prices are not posted online.

Why we chose them

  • The shop's own site says it is closed Monday and Tuesday.
  • Gluten-free and egg-free options are on the menu, per its site.
  • Rotating local art hangs for sale, according to the shop's site.
  • Its own site says no other shop in town does cores and hard-shell dips.
  • Its opening date could not be confirmed, and no dated 2026 post turned up, so check its site first.

J. Ashley Wall Towne Square

Downtown at West Third and Cypress streets, the town square is where the Wendell Chamber of Commerce holds the Wendell Harvest Festival on a Saturday in early October each year. The tradition dates to 1927, per Visit Raleigh, and Triangle on the Cheap puts the crowd at about 10,000. Admission is free, and the day opens with a parade circling the festival grounds, then runs with more than 100 vendors, food trucks and a main stage into the evening.

Why we chose them

  • The 2027 Harvest Festival date had not been published as of early October 2026.
  • The festival has included a Kids Village with inflatables and a Children's Entrepreneur Market.
  • Islands lists Wendell Wonderland in December and a Treat Trail in October as recurring town events, without naming venues.
  • The square has no website or phone of its own, so watch Chamber announcements for festival news.

Address: Wendell — 99 West 3rd Street

Robertson Millpond Preserve

Northwest of town, this 85-acre Wake County preserve uses a Wendell mailing address but sits outside the town limits in unincorporated Wake County. Its draw is a 1.15-mile marked paddle trail through a cypress swamp on Buffalo Creek, which takes about an hour. Paddlers with their own kayak, canoe or paddleboard launch with no fee, and boat rentals go through Tar River Life. Fishing is allowed under North Carolina fishing rules.

Why we chose them

  • Only electric motors are allowed on the water, per Wake County.
  • Life jackets are required on the water, per the county's boating page.
  • For paddleboards, the county recommends the wider western side, buoys 1 through 26.
  • It is open 8 a.m. to sunset daily, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Islands recommended it in a July 4, 2026, story on Wendell.

Treelight Square

On the Wendell Falls side of town, off Wendell Falls Parkway and Taylor Road, this private shopping center is the newer retail and gathering hub. Its restaurants, including Parkside, Falls Local and Don Beto's, are on the Wendell restaurants list. The free Wendell Underground Market series sets up here with more than 30 local vendors, live music and food from Wendell Falls businesses, per The Craft Map.

Why we chose them

  • The next Wendell Underground Market is scheduled for October 24, 2026, and is free to attend.
  • Market hours were not confirmed, so check before going.
  • The Wendell Falls blog mentioned an addition called the Collective in January 2026, with no tenants or date given.
  • Beyond the restaurants, the tenant list could not be verified, and the square's opening year is unconfirmed.

Address: Wendell — 2221 Treelight Way

Turnipseed Nature Preserve

Southwest of Wendell and outside the town limits, this 265-acre Wake County preserve sits where the Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain, and granite boulder outcrops line its trails. It has 2.75 miles of ADA-accessible trail plus 1.75 miles of single-track. The Hidden Boulder Trail, at 1.0 mile, is the longest named route, with the Boulder Trail and Gin Branch Creek Trail North at 0.6 mile each.

Why we chose them

  • No restrooms or drinking water are on site, so bring your own water.
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
  • A soft opening came in fall 2017, per The Restless Wild, which shot the county's opening photos.
  • A second entrance sits at 1505 Pleasants Road, per Wake County.
  • Wake County lists no visitor phone, only a security line.

Wendell Mural Trail

Thirteen murals by 10 artists cover historic downtown buildings on this self-guided trail, and the town publishes a free digital map. Islands counted 14 murals in July 2026, so the total may have grown. Artists include Matthew Willey, Betsy Peters Rascoe and Aurelis Lugo, with three murals by Peggy Lee and two by Lisa Gaither. The town suggests getting food and coffee downtown first, then following the map from Main Street.

Why we chose them

  • It is free and open any time, since every mural is outdoors.
  • The Wendell Museum sits about two blocks away, so the two pair easily on one walk.
  • Islands featured the trail in a July 4, 2026, story on Wendell.

Address: Wendell — downtown, starting along Main Street (no single street address)

Wendell Museum

The museum fills the Alex Wall house on West Second Street, home of Wendell's longtime police chief, who built it with bricks salvaged from the Rigsbee Hotel when it was torn down in the 1960s. The town bought the house in 2019, and the Wendell Historical Society had the displays complete by 2022. A Wendell timeline holds more than 200 photographs and clippings, with exhibits on 18 early businesses and the town's tobacco, cotton and forestry farming.

Why we chose them

  • It is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 1 to 4 p.m., per the Historical Society.
  • Other exhibits cover veterans, schools and 18 active and historic churches.
  • No admission price is published, and the museum lists an email address but no phone.
  • The Society's Wendell Historic Christmas Tour is set for Saturday, December 12, 2026.
  • The Society also publishes a self-guided Historic Trail of 19 buildings dating back as far as 1850.

Address: Wendell — 122 West 2nd Street

Wendell Park and Community Center

West of downtown on W. Third Street, the town's main park shares a campus with the Wendell Community Center. The park has an 18-hole disc golf course with short, medium and long tees, a 2-mile marked nature trail, the fenced K-9 Corral dog park and a playground for ages 2 to 12 with an ADA-accessible swing. The 18,000-square-foot community center, open since August 2000, holds the Parks and Recreation offices and a 40-foot stage.

Why we chose them

  • Two tennis and pickleball courts stay open until 11 p.m., per the Wendell Falls blog.
  • Picnic shelters are available to rent, per a 2024 Wendell Falls blog post.
  • Program fees are lower for residents inside town limits, according to the town FAQ.
  • The park is open dawn to dusk unless an event is scheduled.
  • The parks page and the FAQ list different weekday office opening times, 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., so call first.
