Robertson Millpond Preserve

About

Robertson Millpond Preserve is an 85-acre Wake County nature preserve northwest of Wendell, on Robertson Pond Road in unincorporated Wake County. It protects a cypress swamp on Buffalo Creek, which visitors explore by boat on a marked paddle trail.

The trail winds 1.15 miles through the cypress trees and takes about an hour to paddle. People who own a kayak, canoe or paddleboard can launch it without paying a fee. Fishing is allowed on the millpond as well. Islands recommended the preserve in a July 2026 story about Wendell.

What to know

  • Boat rentals are handled through Tar River Life.
  • Only electric motors are allowed on the millpond.
  • Wearing a life jacket is required on the water.
  • North Carolina fishing rules apply to anyone fishing the millpond.
  • The county recommends paddleboarders use the wider western side, marked by buoys 1 through 26.
