Most people never think about who owns their electric utility. Wake Electric's members don't have to wonder — they do.
The cooperative model
Headquartered in Wake Forest, Wake Electric Membership Corporation is a member-owned electric cooperative serving the northern Wake County region, with a mission of reliable, safe, and affordable electricity. The structure isn't a technicality: members get annual meetings, published recaps, and a utility whose only constituency is the people at the end of its lines.
More than the meter
The modern toolkit is all there — online bill pay, start and stop service, an outage map with reporting, and solar and electric-vehicle resources — but the cooperative's community programs are the tell: education grants of up to $3,000 for local classroom technology, and the annual Youth Tour that sends students to see civics up close.
Member services and outage tools are on the directory listing.
