Johnson Hyundai starts work on new Capital Boulevard dealership
Burlington Mills Road near the Capital Boulevard intersection in Wake Forest is down to one lane on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Monday, September 28, 2026. The closure is for a water tap and sewer tie-in for the future Johnson Hyundai dealership at 10012 Capital Blvd., according to a Town of Wake Forest traffic alert posted Wednesday, September 23.
The contractor is Fred Smith Company. The town says the road will run with intermittent two-way traffic through the work zone, with signs and flaggers in place, and it asks drivers to expect delays or use another route. The alert lists Nelson Fuentes of Fred Smith Company as the contact.
The utility work is the first street-level sign of a project that has been in the Wake Forest review pipeline for more than two years. Johnson Hyundai of Wake Forest now sells and services cars at 11000 Capital Blvd., and the company’s website says a brand new facility opens in 2026.
What is planned at 10012 Capital Boulevard
The clearest public description of the project is a traffic impact analysis prepared by Kimley-Horn and Associates in April 2024 and filed with the US 1 Council of Planning for its June 4, 2024 meeting. The summary describes a dealership of about 48,500 square feet on land north of Burlington Mills Road and east of US 1. The site now holds several commercial uses served by two driveways on Burlington Mills Road and two on US 1.
The study lays out how the dealership would change access to the property:
- The southern US 1 driveway and both Burlington Mills Road driveways would be closed.
- The northern US 1 driveway would stay as a right-in, right-out connection.
- A new full-movement driveway would be built where Burlington Mills Road meets Urial Drive.
- The dealership would add about 1,360 net new vehicle trips a day, with 100 in the morning peak hour and 121 in the evening peak hour.
The study used 2026 as the build year. The Town of Wake Forest Planning Department’s monthly development reports tracked the project under two names. The September 2025 report listed both a “Hyundai Automotive Dealership” of 46,400 square feet on Burlington Mills Road and a separate “Hyundai Offsite Roadway Improvements” infrastructure project as plans under review. The dealership entry was still under review in October 2025. By the January 2026 report only the offsite roadway project remained on the under-review list, and it is still there in the July 2026 report, the most recent one posted. The reports do not say when or whether the dealership site plan itself was approved.
The building’s size differs slightly between sources. The 2024 traffic study says about 48,500 square feet; the town’s 2025 reports say 46,400 square feet. No building permit for the project appears on the town’s list of new business permits, which runs through August 2026.
How the Capital Boulevard freeway changes the site
The new dealership sits at the northern end of what NCDOT calls Segment B of its Capital Boulevard North Upgrade, project U-5307, which will turn US 1 between I-540 and Wake Forest into a controlled-access freeway. NCDOT’s project page says Segment B runs from Durant and Perry Creek roads to Burlington Mills Road and includes a new interchange at Burlington Mills Road. That segment is in final design and right-of-way acquisition. Construction is not scheduled to begin until 2031, and the Wake Forest Business and Industry Partnership said on July 6, 2026 that the state has committed $1.3 billion to the corridor.
The traffic study accounts for that future. Once the interchange is built, it says, the dealership’s remaining US 1 driveway would be removed and the Burlington Mills Road driveway would be limited to right-in, right-out turns. The dealership would then get its main access from a future extension of Stroller Ridge Drive.
The dealership now
Johnson Hyundai of Wake Forest opened in 2019 at 11000 Capital Blvd., Wake Forest, NC 27587, according to the company’s website. The site describes the business as family-owned and minority-owned and says it was recognized as the fastest-growing Hyundai dealership in North Carolina based on the 2025 Hyundai Motors sales report. The company has not published an opening date, a cost or a construction schedule for the new building beyond the 2026 target on its website.
The current store’s hours and phone numbers, according to the company’s website, are:
- The showroom is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
