Forestville Road is getting a traffic signal at Coach Lantern

If you turn out of Coach Lantern Avenue onto Forestville Road in the morning, you have probably sat there a while waiting for a gap. That is about to change, and in the meantime it is going to get worse.

Work to install a traffic signal at the Forestville Road and Coach Lantern Avenue intersection started on Thursday 10 September and runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through late October, according to the town’s notice.

What is being built

More than a set of lights. The job includes removing the existing sidewalk and putting in new sidewalk, curbing, curb ramps and paving, alongside the signal itself.

That list tells you this is a full intersection rebuild rather than a pole-and-lantern installation. Curb ramps in particular are the accessibility piece, and they are the reason a signal job that sounds like a week of work runs for six or seven.

The town has asked drivers to expect temporary traffic pattern changes and to plan for longer journeys through the work zone. The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. window is deliberate and worth noticing: crews are off the road before the evening peak and not on it during the morning one.

Why this intersection

The town’s announcement does not explain why the signal is going in, so treat what follows as our read rather than the official case.

Signals do not appear at suburban intersections because somebody fancied one. They arrive when an unsignalised junction stops working, which in practice means side-street traffic can no longer find gaps in the main road, or the crash pattern has turned into something the town can no longer defend.

Forestville Road is one of the corridors carrying Wake Forest’s growth. Every subdivision that goes in off a road like that adds turning movements at junctions that were designed when the road carried a fraction of the traffic. The junction does not fail gradually in a way anybody notices. It works, and then one year it does not.

The sidewalk and curb ramp work in the same contract points the same direction. That is a junction being brought up to a standard suitable for people on foot, which is generally a sign the town expects people to be walking there.

What a signal actually changes

Worth being clear-eyed about, because signals are not an unmixed win and residents are often surprised.

For traffic coming off Coach Lantern, it is straightforwardly better. A protected gap every cycle beats waiting indefinitely for one that never comes, and the difference at 8 a.m. is measured in minutes rather than seconds.

For through traffic on Forestville Road, it is a cost. A road that ran free now stops. Journey times along the corridor go up, not down, and drivers who have used that road for years will notice within the first week.

For anyone on foot it is the biggest change of the three, and the one nobody discusses. An unsignalised crossing on a busy suburban road is functionally impassable for a child or an older pedestrian. A signal with proper curb ramps makes it crossable. That is the part of this project doing the most work per dollar.

The thing to watch afterwards

Once the signal is live, the number that matters is the timing split: how much green time Forestville Road gets versus Coach Lantern. That single setting decides whether the junction feels fixed or feels like a new problem, and it is adjustable.

Signals are commonly commissioned on estimated volumes and then retimed once real traffic has been observed. If the queues on either approach look badly wrong in November, that is a specific, fixable complaint worth putting to the town’s engineering contact rather than a permanent condition to live with.

Getting through the next six weeks

Practical advice for the run-up to late October.

The work window is 9 to 4, so the two rush hours are largely protected. If your trip through that junction is flexible, the middle of the day is the part to avoid, which is the reverse of the usual advice.

Expect the schedule to slip. The town has said outright that it is subject to weather and unforeseen circumstances, and utility work on a suburban arterial in autumn in North Carolina generally meets both. Late October is a target rather than a promise.

And do not assume the signal goes live the day the crews leave. New signals are typically installed, then run on flash, then commissioned once timings are set and the controller is tied into the wider network. The gap between the cones disappearing and the lights working properly is normal and can run to weeks.

The wider picture

This is one of several bits of infrastructure work the town has running at once. Crews have been replacing curb ramps and sidewalk sections along East Holding, East Sycamore and South Main. GFiber contractors are laying fibre across eight streets on the town’s growth edge. There was a planned power outage on Rogers Road, and a traffic alert on Jones Dairy Road.

None of that is coincidence. A town adding residents at the rate Wake Forest has been adding them spends the years afterwards retrofitting the infrastructure to match, and most of that work is invisible until it is a lane closure on your commute. The signal at Coach Lantern is the growth of five years ago arriving as a construction schedule.
