Raleigh’s International Wine Festival
Noon-8 p.m. · City Plaza, Fayetteville Street
Wine from around the world on City Plaza at the southern end of Fayetteville Street, with free entry and tasting packages sold separately.
The free-entry model matters here. You can walk in, look at what is being poured, and decide whether to buy a tasting package once you are there rather than committing to a ticket weeks ahead.
How these usually run:
- A tasting package buys a glass and a set number of pours
- Additional pours and full glasses sold on top
- Food vendors on site, generally charged separately
- Importers and distributors pouring alongside wineries
Practical advice for an eight-hour outdoor tasting:
- Eat first. This is not the event to arrive at hungry.
- Bring a layer. October evenings in Raleigh drop quickly once the sun is off the plaza.
- Use the decks and leave the car, or plan a ride home
- Spit buckets exist and are not an insult to anybody
City Plaza is a hard-surface public square rather than a park, which means it holds a crowd well and drains if it rains, but there is very little shade. A noon start on a bright October day is warmer than the date suggests.
Tastings of this kind are at their best in the first two hours, when the pourers are fresh, the lines are short and the people behind the tables still have time to tell you what you are drinking. By late afternoon it becomes a considerably more crowded proposition.
