Pumpkin Flotilla
4-7 p.m. · Fred G. Bond Metro Park, Bond Lake
Carved pumpkins are floated out onto Bond Lake at dusk, which is exactly as good as it sounds and has been a Cary tradition for years.
The format is simple. Families carve pumpkins, the pumpkins go onto the water, they are lit, and as the light drops you get a lake covered in floating jack-o'-lanterns. It is genuinely one of the most photogenic free events in the county.
How the evening works:
- Arrive from 4 p.m. while it is still light
- Carving and pumpkin preparation happen on site
- The flotilla itself happens as dusk falls, which is the part to stay for
- Finishes by 7 p.m.
Getting a good spot on the bank matters more here than at most events, because the whole thing is a single visual moment rather than a program you move through. Arrive before dark and claim somewhere with a clear line to the water.
Practical notes:
- Bring a blanket or low chairs
- It gets cold quickly by the water once the sun is down
- Bond Park has substantial parking, but it fills for this
- Check ahead whether pumpkins are provided or brought
Free to attend. It runs the same evening as Zombiepalooza across town, so Cary families have a choice to make.
Bond Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the county, so give yourself a few extra minutes between parking and the waterside if you are carrying chairs and children.
