Memorial Flag-Raising: Neil Michael Cronin

11 a.m.-noon · Town Hall Centennial Plaza

This event has already happened. See what's coming up

The town holds a memorial flag-raising most months at Centennial Plaza outside Town Hall, honoring one service member at a time. This one is for Neil Michael Cronin of the United States Marine Corps.

The ceremonies are short, around an hour, and they are open to anyone who wants to stand there. No ticket, no registration, no expectation that you knew the person being honored.

What happens:

  • The flag is raised in the honoree's name
  • Remarks about their service
  • Family and community members attend when they can
  • The flag flies for the month before the next ceremony

Our read: this is the kind of civic ritual that gets overlooked precisely because it is small and recurring. A monthly ceremony for one person is a different proposition from an annual parade. It is slower, quieter, and it names somebody rather than a category.

Centennial Plaza sits directly at Town Hall, which makes it one of the easiest places in Wake Forest to reach on foot from downtown. An 11 a.m. weekday start does mean it is hard to attend if you work standard hours, which is worth knowing rather than discovering on the day.

If you want to attend future ceremonies, they run through the year on the same footing. The town publishes each one ahead of time.
