Wknc 88.1

WKNC 88.1 FM is NC State’s student-run radio station, broadcasting from Cates Avenue on campus in Raleigh. The alternative programming is the station’s pride, and it says so plainly: indie rock, electronic, underground hip-hop, metal, and jazz.

At 25,000 watts the signal covers the Triangle and reaches well past it, and the webcast picks up anyone further out. The stated goal is music that doesn’t suck, which tells you most of what you need to know about the tone the students are going for.

What to know

• INDY Week has consistently named the station among the best in the Triangle.
• Two digital streams run alongside the main signal, HD-1 and HD-2.
• Recently played songs from both HD channels are posted on the station’s site.
• Students run the station to build the knowledge for a broadcast career.
