Thousand Hills Coffee

Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee & Social is on Athletic Lane in Morrisville, at the NOVEL development. It is a coffee shop meant for sitting a while, whether that means work at a table or meeting friends.

The coffee comes with a history. Rwanda’s coffee industry collapsed during the civil war and genocide of 1994, and founder Jonathan Golden built the company’s first washing station in the Ruli farming region to bring work and farmers back together. He bought a small roaster and hired someone to teach him how to use it.

What to know

• The first roaster held twelve pounds of beans.
• Golden figured that if the idea failed, he would at least have coffee to give as gifts.
• Trust between neighboring farmers had broken down along with the industry.
• The shop is set up for mornings, afternoons, and evenings alike.
