Sunflower Field at Dix Park

About

The Sunflower Field is a free stop at Dix Park, Raleigh’s 308-acre urban park off Umstead Drive. The field blooms each summer, and visitors walk the paths and bring a picnic to enjoy.

The park is open seven days a week from dawn until dusk. Parking is recommended in Lot A and the Flowers Field Lot, and free park-and-ride shuttles circulate on busy days. You can also walk or bike in. The Rocky Branch Greenway enters at Hunt Drive and the Centennial Bikeway Connector at Blair Drive.

What to know

  • Barnburner Black Oil Sunflower Hybrid seeds were planted for the 2025 field.
  • The idea started in 2018 with Raleigh Water and the Office of Sustainability.
  • Visitors are asked to stay on the paths so the flowers are not trampled.
  • The seeds should not be eaten, since the field sits on a former landfill.
  • Well-behaved leashed pets are welcome, but off-leash pets and drones are not.
