Spring Hill House
About
Spring Hill House is a registered historical building on NC State’s Centennial Campus, standing on a rise southwest of downtown Raleigh. It was built around 1815 in the Georgian style as the main house of a working plantation.
Today it holds the North Carolina Japan Center, which moved into the building in June 2001. The house has changed hands several times over two centuries, and its more recent history is tied first to the state hospital system and then to the university. It is a reminder that this corner of Raleigh was farmland long before it was a research campus.
What to know
- Theophilus Hunter, Jr. inherited the property and grew it to 5,000 acres by his death in 1840.

- It passed to the State Hospital in 1908 and belonged to Dorothea Dix Hospital until January 2001.
- The university received the house along with 128 acres of surrounding land.
- A major structural overhaul was carried out in 2000 and 2001, and the exterior was repainted in 2019.
