Lightship Neon

Lightship Neon is Raleigh’s neon design studio, working out of a shop on Uwharrie Court and making signs from real glass. There is nothing quite like a neon sign: bright, distinctive, and bold enough to stop someone mid-stride.

The studio also teaches its trade and repairs older signs, which is not easy to find these days. Most of the work is custom, one-of-a-kind pieces designed with the customer and meant to be functional artwork you keep for years, whether it hangs in a business or at home.

What to know

• The studio is open to the public on weekdays, with weekends by appointment.
• A half-day introductory workshop covers the basics of neon sign-making.
• Some students return regularly to keep building their glass-bending skills.
• The studio hosts events in addition to its custom work and classes.
