Haywood Hall House and Gardens

Haywood Hall is a historic house with gardens on New Bern Place, in the historic district of downtown Raleigh. Four generations of the Haywood family lived in it until 1977, and the place is now a private venue for weddings and other events.

The garden is built around a magnolia that has stood for more than 200 years, a spot known as Eliza’s Garden. Inside, the furnishings cover the whole span of the family’s time here, from the early 19th century through to 1979.

What to know

• Nearly a dozen family portraits hang in the rooms.
• A permanent doll collection is part of the display.
• Two of John Haywood’s daughters ran a school on the property for 38 years.
• That school closed in the 1870s.
• Tours run on Wednesdays, and other days can be booked by appointment.
