FRESH. Local Ice Cream is a mom-and-pop shop with a downtown Cary storefront on East Chatham Street. Jason and Casey Hillman started the business in Raleigh in 2011, and the ice cream is still made by hand from locally sourced ingredients.

The flavor list runs to the unusual, and the shop also makes ice cream cakes to order. A FRESH ice cream truck goes out to events, and the owners will help put together an ice cream social, which is a useful thing to know if you are planning a party.

What to know

The Cary shop opened in spring 2017.
The first FRESH shop was on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.
There are also FRESH locations in Apex and Holly Springs.
Owner Jason Hillman describes the ice cream as award-winning.
