Pope House Museum
About
The Pope House Museum is the 1901 home of Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope, a physician who ran for mayor of Raleigh in 1919. The City of Raleigh operates it on South Wilmington Street downtown, and it is the only African-American house museum in North Carolina.
The house is still furnished with the Pope family’s own possessions, which is what makes it unusual among historic houses in the state, and the National Park Service built a national curriculum lesson around it. Admission is free and tours are first come, first served. Historic Raleigh walking tours also depart from here on Saturdays from March through November. There is no dedicated parking.
