This is the original Char-Grill, open on Hillsborough Street since 1959 and described on the company’s own locations page as where it all started. It is a walk-up window and drive-thru with no table service.
Every patty is cooked over an open charcoal flame to order, and the company is blunt about it: you will never see a pre-cooked burger go on a bun here. You write your order on a paper slip and drop it in a slot. The menu is burgers, hot dogs, fries and hand-dipped milkshakes. INDY Week readers voted Char-Grill the Best Cheap Eats in Wake County in 2025.
