Trick or Treat Monster Mash
2-5 p.m. · Hillsborough Street
A free afternoon of trick-or-treating along Hillsborough Street, with participating businesses handing out sweets to children in costume.
Business-district trick-or-treating has become the dominant format for this in the Triangle, and the reasons are practical. It happens in daylight, on a known route, with adults everywhere, and it does not depend on whether your own street has enough participating houses.
How to work the route:
- Costumes are expected rather than optional
- Start at one end and walk it rather than driving between clusters
- Three hours is generous. Most families need about ninety minutes.
- Businesses run out. Earlier is better for the popular stops.
Hillsborough Street runs along the north edge of the NC State campus and has been steadily rebuilt over the past decade into something genuinely walkable, with wide sidewalks and crossings that work. That makes it a better route for small children than most commercial strips in the county.
For anyone coming in from north of the city, this is a drive rather than a local outing, so it is worth pairing with something else downtown rather than making the trip for three hours alone.
Free, and no registration.
Daylight trick-or-treating on a commercial street solves a problem a lot of parents have quietly, which is that their own neighborhood no longer has enough participating houses to make the evening worth the effort. A known route with staffed businesses is a reliable substitute.
