Falling for Local

11 a.m.-6 p.m. · Dorothea Dix Park, 2105 Umstead Drive

This event has already happened. See what's coming up

More than 150 local makers set up at Dorothea Dix Park for the day, alongside hayrides, pumpkins and games. Free to get in.

A market of that size is a genuinely different proposition from the ten-stall version most towns run. At 150 vendors you are no longer choosing between four candle makers; you are looking at ceramics, printmaking, textiles, food producers and woodwork in enough depth to find something specific.

What is on beyond the stalls:

  • Hayrides
  • Pumpkins
  • Games and activities for children
  • Food vendors
  • The park itself, which is the largest open green space in the city

Dix Park is worth the trip even if you buy nothing. It is 300-odd acres of former hospital campus on a rise looking back at the downtown skyline, and the view from the top of the hill is the best free thing in Raleigh.

Practical notes:

  • Bring a bag. A tote beats carrying six paper-wrapped purchases.
  • Cash helps at smaller stalls, though most makers take cards now
  • Seven hours is a long window, so late afternoon is the quiet end
  • The ground is grass and slopes. Strollers are manageable but not effortless.

Free to attend.

Dix Park is still being built out as a public park, and events like this are part of how the city makes the case for it. Going is a small vote for the project as well as a morning out, which is worth knowing if you have opinions about what happens to 300 acres beside downtown.
