Whitman Masonry, Inc.

Whitman Masonry is a commercial masonry contractor with an office on Waters Edge Drive in southwest Raleigh, working in brick, block and stone. Johnny “Mackie” Whitman started the company in 1965, on his 21st birthday, down in Benson.

The early years were residential work around Wake and Johnston counties, and the company moved into commercial jobs in the 1980s. It is family owned and veteran owned, and it is now one of the oldest and most experienced masonry contractors in the state. Its stated core values are safety, professionalism, integrity, education, reliability and quality.

• Mackie’s son Connie ran a masonry crew at 16 and has since built a career spanning four decades.
• His brother Donnie worked for the company for 48 years, and grandson Troy for 18.
• Doug Burton, a VMI civil engineering graduate and Army Corps officer, became a partner in 1990.
