The Peddler Steakhouse

About

The Peddler Steakhouse has been on Glenwood Avenue since 1969, in the same building where it opened. Gale and Joyce Barefoot built the place, and the way it runs still comes from them. It is an old-fashioned steakhouse, and it has never pretended otherwise.

Steaks are cooked over live charcoal, and a server will cut one at your table if you ask. Seafood and chicken come off the same charcoal fire. The dining room has the feel of a place that settled into its ways long ago.

What to know

  • Gale Barefoot started as a dishwasher at nineteen and was running the operation within a few years.
  • Joyce Barefoot greeted customers for 44 years, until her death in 2013.
  • Each steak is aged a minimum of 28 days for flavor and tenderness.
  • Prime rib is the house specialty on the menu.
