James B. Hunt Jr. Library (North Carolina State University)
About
The James B. Hunt Jr. Library stands on NC State’s Centennial Campus off Partners Way, one of the university’s two main libraries alongside the D.H. Hill Jr. Library on North Campus. It opened in 2013 and has been an architectural landmark ever since.
Inside, it is less a book warehouse than a set of workrooms: visualization spaces, large display walls, digital media and gaming labs, music studios. Natural light fills the building, and plenty of people come simply to study or to meet a friend. It is worth walking into even if you have no reason to be there.
What to know
- Time magazine featured the building as the Library of the Future when it opened.
- An automated storage and retrieval system called the bookBot fetches items from the collection.
- That system holds books in one-ninth the space conventional shelving would need.
- A floor map is published online to help visitors find particular spaces.
- Construction was completed in 2012, the year before the library opened.
