Historic Oakwood Cemetery

About

Historic Oakwood Cemetery covers seventy-two acres in Raleigh. It is a working cemetery and a quiet place to walk, with more than three miles of paved roadway running through it. Thirty of those acres are still open for future needs, which is enough burial space for well over two hundred years.

Several thousand feet of wrought iron fencing edge the grounds. A Visitor and Information Center built of local granite in 1910 sits on the property, and the cemetery also keeps a Memorial Cremation Garden and a Chapel Mausoleum.

What to know

  • Virtual tours and a video gallery are available on the website.
  • The Oakwood Veteran Project works to identify veterans buried there.
  • A memorial erected in 1930 commemorates soldiers of the Confederacy.
  • Bronze plaques on it recognize North Carolina servicemen and women.
  • The mausoleum handles both full body and cremation entombments.
