About

DHIC is a nonprofit developer of affordable housing with offices on South Wilmington Street in downtown Raleigh. It has been at this since 1974, more than fifty years of building homes for families, seniors and individuals across North Carolina.

Its motto, developing housing and building community, describes the two halves of the work. DHIC builds and manages communities and stays involved once residents move in, with resident services running alongside the buildings themselves. It also helps people who want to buy a home of their own, which is a different job from renting one out.

What to know

  • The portfolio includes 27 family communities and 20 senior communities.
  • Two supportive housing communities are part of the mix as well.
  • Eight more properties are under development or in rehabilitation.
  • The Homeownership Center helps buyers get mortgage-ready, find a home and choose a lender.
  • More than 2,100 people have become homeowners through the center since 2004.
