Court of North Carolina

About

The Court of North Carolina is the largest green space on the main campus of NC State University, on the north side of campus. It is one of the ten Hallowed Places the university names, and some of the oldest buildings on campus line its edges.

On a warm day students spread out across the grass between classes, eating lunch or working through notes for the next exam. Professors have been known to move a lecture outdoors here when the weather allows it. The court has taken on many lives over the years, and this is the latest of them.

What to know

  • The space was known as the 1911 Field before it took its present name.
  • Cows grazed the land as pasture back in 1889.
  • It later held classrooms and offices for professors.
  • A campus-wide snowball fight breaks out here on snow days.
