City of Raleigh Museum
About
The City of Raleigh Museum sits on Fayetteville Street downtown and keeps the city’s own history: the objects, the stories and the exhibits built out of them. For more than two hundred years the capital had nowhere to put any of it, which is part of why the museum matters to the people who run it.
It opened in 1993 under the name Raleigh City Museum, starting with a single exhibit. Alongside the collection there are events through the year and a membership program for regular visitors.
What to know
- The museum was run as a nonprofit until July 2012.
- The City of Raleigh took over its operations at that point.
- The nonprofit Friends of the COR Museum supports the work alongside the city.
- Membership fees go to that group for programs and outreach.
- Donations can be made at any time without joining or renewing a membership.
