The motto over the door explains the whole enterprise: yesterday's architecture, today's artisans.
The building and the idea
The Cotton Company fills one of historic downtown Wake Forest's great commercial buildings with a marketplace and art gallery that function as a single, browseable world: more than 80 local vendors across the bustling floor, artists in residence working where shoppers can find them, and a gallery program that keeps the walls turning over. It's the rare retail space that operates as a community institution — part shop, part gallery, part event hall.
More than a marketplace
That last part is literal: the building also houses The Graham, an event space available for rent, and the calendar runs from Meet the Maker events — where the person who made the thing stands next to the thing — to the seasonal markets that anchor downtown's busiest weekends.
Every town says it wants to support local makers. The Cotton Company built the infrastructure for it: eighty small businesses under one historic roof, in a building that has been part of downtown's story for generations and now hosts its next chapter. Hours and vendor information are on their directory listing.
