Small plates, big reputation: inside Bodega, downtown’s date-night gem

A tapas room with a serious wine list, a rum collection, and 500 reviewers who agree.

“Hidden gem” is the most overused phrase in local dining, but Bodega keeps earning it the honest way — through roughly 500 Google reviews averaging 4.7 stars, most of which read like love letters.

The concept

Bodega Tapas, Wine, and Rum is exactly what the name promises, done seriously: Spanish-leaning small plates built for ordering in waves, a curated wine list, and a rum selection you don't expect to find in a town this size. The room is warm and dim — intimate without feeling cramped — and guests consistently land on the same words: phenomenal food, warm service, romantic.

The service stories are their own genre. Regulars tell of the owner coming out from the back to help pick a bottle when the first two choices were out of stock — the kind of hospitality that turns a dinner into a habit.

How to do it right

Bodega takes reservations, which in Wake Forest's walk-in-heavy dining scene is its own kind of luxury — book one, especially on weekends, when the free lot next door fills fast during White Street events. Then order in waves: two plates each, see how you feel, order more. The burrata dishes and the salmon draw the most consistent praise, and the rum program rewards curiosity.

Downtown Wake Forest has quietly built a real dining scene. Bodega is the proof it can hold a special occasion. Reservations and details are on their directory listing.
